When Emile starts wearing a Hitler Moustache and haircut, regualr cafes users Aleks, Dair and Borko are threown into confusion. ‘John Knowles’ writing is lyrical and draws us in: “…everyone has a time, a moment that defines them,” stated in a strong performance from Marc Twinn as Hans Scholl, gives the audience food for thought. The storyline makes clear why these young people decide to rail against Hitler, even though it is dangerous for them. John Knowles also directs and his direction is clear and specific, allowing the text to tell its story effectively. The scene at the railway station is particularly effective, setting a tone and mood that gives a strong flavour of the time and the heightened emotion of the situation.’

There have been many theories about what happened aboard the Mary Celeste, the latest being that her cargo of neat alcohol had been stored in un-seaworthy casks which leaked vapours throughout the ship, turning the crew into walking drunks and filling them with delirium and madness. All we do know is that they were never seen again. 

Our story begins on the Mary Celeste and moves onto a small row boat, set adrift on a vast sea, where a priest, a cabin boy and a woman in chains confront the past and one another.

'Working with Fetch Theatre Productions was an absolute pleasure. Professional, enthusiastic, amiable, and inspiring - organised, efficient, and excellent at working with our venue from inception to fruition. And my! What fruit! The relationship between our Tudor galleon and Fetch's production 'The Mary Celeste & The Beast of the Bowery' was symbiotic and in perfect marriage. Fetch's promotional material was spine chilling and prolific, each video and photo got me and The Golden Hinde staff more excited to help promote and facilitate such an entertaining 'night of the soul' story telling! And the performance itself - the actors brought so much emotion, they were uncomfortably creepy, and very talented; the sound, lighting, and set was exactly right.
